On 22 June 2022, the European Heating Industry (EHI) hosted an online event on “Hybrid heat pumps, biomethane: renewable heating for the European building stock”, to discuss how hybrids and biomethane can contribute to achieve the 2030 and 2050 EU climate goals and to reduce dependence on natural gas.
The event was a panel discussion featuring Galin Gentchev – European Commission, DG Energy, Giulia Laura Cancian – Secretary General of the European Biogas Association, Denver Rumney – Group Innovation Lead at E.ON, Pierre-Louis François – CEO of Groupe Atlantic, Federica Sabbati – EHI Secretary General and moderator Peter Vis, former Head of Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Climate Action.
Here are the main takeaways of the discussion:
- Decarbonisation requires a mix of different sustainable and diversified energy solutions, including technologies working with electricity or renewable gases as well as the combination of both such as hybrid heat pumps.
- In this unprecedented #energytransition, hybrids should be considered given the energy savings they bring to the energy system, making it more resilient. We already observe a strong market growth for hybrid heat pumps. Last year, the sales were almost equivalent to 10% of electric heat pumps and the hybrid heat pump market in Europe grew by more 200% in one year.
- The REPowerEU target of 35 bcm of biomethane production in the EU by 2030, compared to the current level of 3 bcm is ambitious but achievable. With prices that are today competitive with gas prices, and benefits for local communities due to its circular system (waste management), biomethane use in hybrid heat pumps make this heating system a versatile, sustainable option for the renovation house market.
