Breakfast meeting:

Connecting consumers to smart heating:
Benefitting consumers, the grid and EU climate and energy policies

with EHI, the association of the European Heating Industry

Members’ Salon of the European Parliament, Brussels

Smart heating? What is it?

How does smart heating benefit consumers?

Does smart heating promote energy efficiency in buildings?

Sector-coupling? How can a smarter heating sector benefit the grid?

The digital revolution has changed many industries beyond recognition and has done so very quickly. ICT technologies will leave no sector untouched, including the energy sector. The heating sector will be no exception.

At the same time, the energy and heating are also in the process of decarbonization, an equally revolutionary development.

Rather than complicating matters, digital technologies will help to deliver on the decarbonization challenge. Smart technologies offer an opportunity for previously disparate sectors like buildings, industry, power and transport to help each other out.

However, none of this will happen without consumers’ buy-in. Smart heating needs to offer them tangible benefits.

The Clean Energy Package will promote smart technologies in the building sector. A Smart Readiness Indicator for buildings will be introduced in 2021. Ecodesign and Energy Labelling measures on smart appliances and Building Automation & Control Systems are planned.
